CHAPTER 1
Unexpected news
“Mother I don’t understand the meaning of this?” Eliza said as she stared at her mother who sat just across her, drinking her tea.
“There is nothing to understand Eliza. You are to marry Sir Daniel Thorton. It has been decided. Do you wish to go against the King?” Her mother Lady Camille Rosawell asked her with a raised eyebrow.
Eliza held her tongue, not wanting to respond. Camille Rosawell was no one to fight with. There was no way that Eliza could displease her mother.
“No mother. I do not wish to displease you or the King. But mother, father wouldn’t want this. You must remember his last wish?” Eliza pleaded, trying to make her mother reconsider.
“I know what your father’s last wish was Eliza. But I cannot do anything in this matter. I cannot go against the King” Camille said looking drained all of a sudden.
Eliza looked away from her mother and took a deep breath. Her father Sir Richard Rosawell had been one of the most respected men in the society. He had also been the King’s very dear friend and a knight.
“Eliza” Her mother’s voice brought her back to the present. Eliza took a deep breath and looked at her mother in vain.
“I will do as you say mother” Eliza whispered and got up from the table, making her way to her bedchamber. She did not wish to fight with her mother, but neither did she wish to marry one of the King’s knights.
It was her father’s wish on his death bed that Eliza was to never marry a knight. He did not wish for her to get involved with a man whose life was always in danger.
There was a light knock on the door and Eliza straightened her dress and sat straighter on the bed.
“Come in” Eliza said in a clear voice and the door to the bedchamber opened and Sarah, Eliza’s maid came strolling in and gasped as her eyes fell on Eliza’s appearance.
“Lady Eliza. You need to dress. The King is coming to our house. You have to look presentable” Sarah said and Eliza lifted herself from her bed and smiled at Sarah.
Sarah was more of a friend to Eliza than a maid. They had both grown up together in this very house. Eliza’s father never agreed to the friendship that Eliza had with the maids, but Eliza never listened.
“I did not know. Sarah, will you please get the bathing water ready and pick out a dress and jewellery that goes along with it” Eliza said, Sarah nodded and hurriedly ran to the bath chamber to get Eliza’s bath water ready.
Eliza sat on the bed thinking about whatever her mother had told her. She was needed to marry Sir Daniel Thorton. He was one of the King’s most trusted knights, but why did the King want Eliza to marry him?
“My Lady your bath water is ready” Sarah said and Eliza looked over at her and smiled once again.
“Help me” she said and turned her back to Sarah so that she could remove her dress and help her off with the corset that helped moulding her body together. The corsets were made longer and more restrictive than before and Eliza hated them. She took a deep breath of relief as Sarah removed her corset.
Once everything was undone, Eliza submerged her body into the water and let it soak every inch of hers. Sarah stepped forward and started to scrub Eliza’s body.
“Tell me Sarah did you know about my marriage proposal?” Eliza asked and felt Sarah’s hands go still.
“Yes, My Lady. Lady Rosawell spoke to me about it and told me not to inform you” Sarah whispered and Eliza felt a weird pain in her chest.
“Will you miss me Sarah?” Eliza asked and felt the maid’s hands shake on her back.
“Yes, My Lady” Sarah whispered and Eliza smiled.
“Oh! Don’t worry Sarah. You are to come with me” Eliza said and Sarah became silent.
Once Eliza had finished bathing, Sarah handed her the wrap.
“Have you taken out
my clothes?” Eliza asked in a clear voice and Sarah nodded and
followed Eliza back to the room.
The dress that lay on the bed was a dress that was gifted to Eliza by her father. It was made of pure silk and was red in colour. The dress matched Eliza’s black hair and green eyes and complimented her body. The dress had a jacket-bodice with draped and trimmed skirts in the back. Ruffles and pleated frills were characteristic trimming.
Sarah hurriedly dressed Eliza’s silhouette with her corset. The skirt of the dress was supported with the help of bustle and crinoline. The structure was attached to the waist and extended down to the ground. The crinoline was suspended by the bustle, which was sufficient for supporting the drapery and train at the back of the skirt. Once she was done, she started to work on Eliza’s hair.
Eliza’s hair was pulled back at the sides and was worn in a cluster of ringlets, with fringe over the forehead.
“My Lady you look very beautiful” Sarah said and Eliza turned towards her and smiled.
“Thank you Sarah. Now when do I need to go down” Eliza asked and Sarah looked at the watch.
“It is going to be seven in a few minutes, My Lady. We must go now” Sarah said and Eliza rose gracefully.
Eliza walked down the stairs and made her way into the dining hall. She noticed her mother giving instructions to the cook and smiled.
The dining hall was lit with lights and a huge chandelier hung in the middle, showcasing the beauty of everything around. The walls were shadowed with dull lights and had fresh flowers attached along them giving the entire place a very light aromatic smell.
Eliza knew that her mother always wanted things to be perfect.
Lady Rosawell wore a dress similar to Eliza, but it was a light green dress which had the skirt trimmed a little more than it was in Eliza’s. Eliza walked towards her mother and waited to grab her attention.
“Mother” Eliza said in a timid voice as Lady Rosawell turned to look at her.
Lady Rosawell gasped as she took in Eliza’s appearance. “Oh my Eliza you look beautiful my child” Her mother said as she embraced Eliza.
Eliza pulled back from the hug and smiled at her mother. She was going to miss everything about her house. But mostly she would miss her mother.
“Mother, when is the King to arrive?” Eliza asked as she helped her mother with the arrangements.
“He must be arriving any moment along with his knights” Lady Rosawell smiled.
Eliza stiffened as her mother told her this. The knights were supposed to come too? Did that mean Sir Daniel was also coming?
“Mother, is Sir Daniel coming too?” Eliza asked as she held her breath and waited for her mother to answer.
“Oh! No dear child. Sir Daniel is busy with some work. You do know about those rebels that have been creating some problems, don’t you?” Lady Rosawell asked her daughter.
“Yes, I do mother” Eliza said and suddenly prayed that Sir Daniel would be all right. Even though she did not wish to marry, she couldn’t change her fate. It was her duty as the future Lady Thorton to pray for her soon to be husband.
“Lady Rosawell” A servant called running towards them.
“The King is here”
Eliza looked at her mother and followed after her. She could tell by the stiff posture of her mother’s back that she was tense.
Eliza wished that her mother could somehow stop Eliza from leaving, but she knew that was foolish. Her mother couldn’t do anything and neither could Eliza.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
“This cannot be happening” Sir Daniel cursed as he strode out of the training ground. His men continued to train as he passed them by.
He was supposed to marry Sir Richard Rosawell’s daughter. It was the King’s order and he was helpless.
“Damn!” Sir Daniel cursed as he hit a piece of log with bare foot.
“My Lord” A loud voice spoke from besides him and his head snapped towards Thomas, who was one of his knights.
“Yes, Thomas?” Sir Daniel asked through his teeth. He was in mood of talking.
“My Lord, I heard about the King’s decision. But please do not hurt yourself over it” Thomas said as he looked at Sir Daniel’s foot.
Daniel ignored what Thomas was saying and strode to his temporary bedchamber. He would have to stay at the King’s castle before he could go back home.
He sat in his bedchamber as he thought of the discussion he had had with the King.
“You are to marry Lady Eliza Rosawell, daughter of Sir Richard Rosawell” The King spoke as Sir Daniel looked at him shocked.
“Marriage? But sire, I do not wish to marry. You must know that.” Sir Daniel said as he looked at the King.
“I know that very well Sir Daniel. But you need to marry now. I am afraid I worry for you. You have crossed the age, when normal people marry. I want you to remain happy dear friend and I know that Lady Eliza is that person who can keep you happy” The King spoke as he smiled at Daniel.
“If you are my friend then why force me into this? I do not know who Lady Eliza is. I have met her father and had the honour to work with him, but other than that I know nothing of her or her family.” Sir Daniel said as he spoke, looking directly at the King
“Aren’t I your friend Daniel? I may be the King but you are one of my most trusted men. That is why you are the leader towards the West, where the rebels are the strongest. I wish to see you happy and have children. I wish for your happiness” The King said and Sir Daniel remained unmoved.
“I do not wish to marry” Sir Daniel said in a cold voice and turned away from the King.
“Stop” The King roared no longer being nice.
“If you do not wish to Daniel, then don’t. But I give you no choice. You will marry Lady Eliza. It is an order” The King asserted and Daniel walked out of the room, without a word.
A light knock on the door brought Daniel back to the present. He got up and walked towards the door.
“Who is it?” Sir Daniel asked in a loud booming voice.
“My Lord, it is me. I have a message from the King” said Thomas.
Daniel took a deep breath and opened the door.
“What is it that you want Thomas?” Sir Daniel asked in a cold voice. He did not wish to speak to anyone in this foul mood.
“The King has requested for you to dress. He wants you to look presentable as there is a feast at Lady Rosawell’s house” Thomas said, holding his breath.
He did not want to anger Sir Daniel as he knew that wouldn’t be good for him.
“Tell him Sir Daniel is busy” Daniel spoke through his teeth as he looked at Thomas.
“I am sorry Sir Daniel, but I cannot do that. Your presence is demanded” Thomas said and quickly retreated.
Sir Daniel closed the door behind him and pulled at his hair. He did not wish to marry. He loved his present life. He was a free man, a man who had mistresses and worried about no one. This marriage was nothing but a burden for him.
He knew he had no choice but to carry this burden. He felt bad for Lady Eliza who was to be his wife.
“This marriage will not change anything for me” Daniel vowed to himself and prepared for his leave
CHAPTER 2
Surprise
Lady Rosawell looked at the King as he strode towards the entrance of the house, with his men following behind.
“Mother, are you sure that Sir Daniel is not coming?” Eliza asked from next to Lady Rosawell.
“Yes, I am very sure my dear child. Now behave well in front of the King. I do not wish for you to get into trouble” Lady Rosawell said and Eliza nodded and turned to look at the King.
He hadn’t changed since the time Eliza had seen him. He was very much the same. He was of Eliza’s father’s age, but had a completely different personality. His black hair was swept back and plastered to his head. His blue eyes were as striking as usual. He wore a three piece suit consisting of a high-buttoned sack coat with a matching waistcoat and trousers. King Stephen had his sword resting along his hip.
“Lady Rosawell” the King said once he saw Lady Rosawell standing at the entrance along with Eliza.
“Sire” Lady Rosawell said bowing her head. “No need for such formalities. I am Stephen to you dear” The King said catching hold of Lady Rosawell’s hand and brought it to his lips.
“It is a pleasure to meet you as ever” King Stephen said and smiled at her brightly.
“As it is for me Stephen” Lady Rosawell said and smiled at him fondly.
“I would like you to meet my daughter, Eliza” Lady Rosawell said as she introduced her daughter.
“Eliza! You sure have become a beauty. Daniel is going to be lucky to have you” King Stephen said and kissed Eliza’s hand.
“Thank you Sire” Eliza said as she bowed her head in front of him.
“Come on, let us all go in” Lady Rosawell said and strode towards the inside of the house, sensing her daughters discomfort.
Eliza followed after her mother in a hurry. She suddenly felt like running back into her room and locking herself.
She loved King Stephen like a father and knew that he wished the best for her, but she wasn’t ready for this. She was glad about the fact that Sir Daniel hadn’t come along, she couldn’t face him. Not yet, at least.
“So Eliza, Tell me what do you think of the marriage?” King Stephen asked once all of them sat at the dining table.
Eliza opened her mouth to answer and caught her mother’s warning glance. She knew that she had to be careful.
“Well Sire, I am very much overwhelmed at the moment. I did not expect to get married and that too without my knowledge or choice. I had chosen to live my life with my mother and follow my father’s wish. If you do not know of it, let me tell you. My father wished that I was never to marry a knight. But I cannot go against you, not because I am scared but because my mother pleads me so. I respect you Sire, but I really wish that you would have spoken to me on this matter” Eliza said and closed her eyes taking a deep breath.
She knew that she shouldn’t have said whatever she said, but now it was done. She couldn’t do anything about it.
“I am sorry Eliza” King Stephen whispered and Eliza opened her eyes to look at him. She was shocked that he was apologising to her.
“You do not need to apologise Sire. I know that you wish to see me happy. You were my father’s very dear friend and I do not hate you or despise you.” Eliza whispered softly, just soft enough for him to hear.
“I wish I could do something Eliza. But believe me, Sir Daniel is the perfect man for you and I know you will be happy with him. If he ever does something to displease you, you can always tell me. You are of age Eliza. If I might dare to say, you have crossed the age. I promise you that you will be happy in this marriage. I would not have given you away to anyone. Sir Daniel is one of my most trusted and respected men” King Stephen said smiling at someone across the room.
Eliza followed his gaze, confused and froze.
A man sitting across her was watching her, more like analysing her.
Colour rose to her cheek and she tried to look away but couldn’t.
He was a man like no other. Eliza had met her fair share of men in her life from nice to a rake. But this man was different. He gave out a vibe that sent a clear message to the people watching him. He wasn’t the one to be messed with.
His dark blue eyes studied her face. His brown hair was messed up and sticking in all different places. Eliza’s breath got caught in her throat as his eyes met hers. She couldn’t pull away. She was captured in his gaze.
“Eliza” King Stephen’s voice brought her back to reality. She pulled her eyes away from the man across and looked at the King.
“Forgive me Sire.” Eliza said and looked down into her lap. Her hands were folded as she fidgeted with them. Here she was, promised to some other man and thinking of another.
“Do you wish to meet Sir Daniel Eliza?” King Stephen asked her and she felt her eyes going wide.
Eliza looked at the King and froze. Her mother had assured her that Sir Daniel wouldn’t be present here today. Did that mean he was here? Sitting here? Watching her?
“Sire, I do not feel so well. Do you mind if I go to my bedchamber” Eliza pleaded as she looked at the King, wanting to get away at this instant.
She did not care about what King Stephen or Sir Daniel would think. She needed to get away. She could not face him.
King Stephen watched Eliza confused. What had happened to the poor girl all of a sudden? She seemed to be fine before.
“I do not have a problem if you wish to leave Eliza. Pray do take care” The King said and rose from his place.
“Eliza wait” Lady Rosawell spoke sternly, stopping Eliza in her tracks. She knew that her daughter was faking illness and she wouldn’t let her get away. Lady Rosawell hadn’t known that Sir Daniel would be coming today. It was as much of a shock to her as it was to Eliza.
“Yes mother?” Eliza replied, her voice quivering slightly.
Lady Rosawell crossed the room and reached for her daughter. Catching her by her hand Lady Rosawell turned Eliza to face her. “I know you are just fine. Now I wish for you to sit here and finish your food. If you do not wish to meet Sir Daniel, I will ask Stephen not to. But do not act this way in front of the King” Lady Rosawell said in a sharp voice and Eliza bit her lip. Lady Rosawell made sure that her words weren’t loud enough for King Stephen and the other men to hear. Her mother’s words had hurt her. She did not know why, but they had.
Eliza nodded her head and walked back towards the table and sat down.
“Are you alright Eliza? If you wish to retire pray do. I do not wish to keep you here when you are ill” The King asked curiously as he looked at Eliza’s pale face.
“Yes Sire. I am all right. Do not worry. I must eat something. I will feel better” Eliza said and Lady Rosawell announced for the food to be served. Eliza felt the stranger’s eyes on her while she ate her food and it made her uncomfortable. She was used to people looking at her, but that man, he made her insides quiver and she did not like the feeling at all.
Once the feast was over, Eliza was proud of herself. She had managed to keep her eyes on the plate and not let it wander towards the stranger.
“I think it is time that you meet your future husband Eliza” King Stephen said and Eliza felt her body shake. She started to feel light headed and took a deep breath to keep herself calm.
“Stephen I think it is better if Eliza doesn’t meet Sir Daniel. She isn’t well as you can see” Lady Rosawell said looking at her daughter concerned.
“But Camille,” I have invited Sir Daniel and I think it will be rude to keep him waiting” King Stephen said and looked at Lady Rosawell sternly.
“Please Sire. I pray to go to the bedchamber” Eliza whispered and closed her eyes, balling her hands into a fist to stop her from shaking.
“If that is what you wish Eliza. Then we must wait here. We will stay for the night” King Stephen said and rose from the table.
Eliza got up and caught hold of the table to keep her from falling.
“Eliza?” King Stephen said his voice sounding concerned.
“I am all right Sire” Eliza whispered and tried to walk but her legs shook.
“I will take her to her room Stephen” A deep voice boomed making shivers run through Eliza’s spine. Suddenly she was all right. Her legs did not shake neither did she feel ill.
“I am all right Sire. I will go now” Eliza said and walked towards her bedchamber leaving everyone watching after her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I wish to apologise for my daughter’s actions” Lady Rosawell said as she looked at King Stephen and the stranger.
Lady Rosawell was introduced to the stranger, who was none other than Sir Daniel after Eliza had left. She approved of him. He was the kind of man that would take care of Eliza. At least that is what she wished. She had heard of his reputation and was worried about the fact that he would never be able to love her daughter. Lady Rosawell wanted her daughter to be happy.
“It is all right My Lady” Sir Daniel said as he smiled at Lady Rosawell and bent forward to kiss her hand.
“I shall have a maid escort you to your bedchambers. Tomorrow you will be introduced to my daughter, Sir Daniel” Lady Rosawell said and called for a maid.
“Thank you My Lady” Sir Daniel said and followed after the maid, leaving King Stephen behind.
As he followed the maid he noticed how she looked, blonde hair and thin. Sir Daniel had his share of women and he wasn’t ashamed of it. He reached out his hand to catch hold of her waist but decided against it as he remembered that he was in Lady Rosawell’s house. He did not want to create an embarrassing situation for himself or for King Stephen.
“Here is the room, Sir Daniel” The maid spoke, pulling Sir Daniel from his thoughts. He looked over at the maid and noticed her seductive stare.
“Thank you” Sir Daniel said and smiled at her. He wouldn’t get into trouble, not with the King in the same house.
The maid looked over at him and pouted but didn’t say anything. She must have known of his reputation otherwise she wouldn’t have offered. Later, as Sir Daniel lay in bed his thoughts still stuck to Lady Eliza.
She was a beauty and that too an innocent beauty. He knew that from the moment he laid his eyes on her. From what he could guess, she hadn’t ever been kissed. He felt a strange sense of pride to be married to her. He would not touch her that was for sure. He had promised that much to himself. He wouldn’t change the way he lived his life, just because he was marrying. She was anyways inexperienced for him. He did not want to waste his time teaching the art of love making to anyone. Even if it was going to be his own wife, he wouldn’t waste his time.
He had mistresses for that. She would just be his wife, just someone who would hold the title. He did not wish to burden himself. He wouldn’t burden himself.
Somehow he needed to convince her not to marry him. Did she not know of his reputation?
If she didn’t then he would show it to her.
Lady Eliza wasn’t someone whom he wanted to ponder upon. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep.
Tomorrow he would be introduced to her and give her every reason to dislike him.
Chapter 3
The meeting
Eliza opened her eyes feeling the heat of the sunlight on her face. Was it morning already? Today would be the worst day of her life.
She knew that she would have to face Sir Daniel today. There was no way out for her. But could she face him? Would she be able to face him?
“My Lady” A voice spoke and Eliza jumped in her bed and noticed Sarah standing there and watching her with a curious expression.
“I have been calling your name for the last five minutes My Lady. You seemed to be in deep thought. Would you like to tell me?” Sarah offered with a gentle smile and Eliza sighed.
Sarah was the only one in the entire house whom Eliza could call a friend.
“Sarah, I don’t think I can meet him. I am not strong” Eliza whispered as she looked at Sarah with pleading eyes, wishing that somehow Sarah would save her.
“My Lady, I know you are worried. But please have some faith in yourself. You are one of the most beautiful women I have seen in my entire life. What do you have to fear? Sir Daniel will love you” Sarah said earnestly and Eliza looked away from her.
“I am not scared about the fact that he will like me or not. I do not wish to marry him Sarah. I promised Father. Don’t you think I should acknowledge his last wish?” Eliza asked as she moved around the room. She felt really fidgety all of a sudden.
“My Lady, You are not at fault. It was the King who decided that you and Lord Daniel are to marry. You couldn’t have done anything, even if you wished you could. “Sarah said as she caught hold of Eliza’s hand and stopped her
.
Eliza nodded her head at Sarah and sighed. She knew that she wasn’t strong, but somehow she would have to be.
She had no choice but to meet Sir Daniel today.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Your bath is ready My Lady” Sarah said.
“Thank you Sarah. I will need your assistance” Eliza said and Sarah nodded and followed Eliza into the bath chamber.
Eliza removed her nightdress and settled deep into the water. The hot water felt soothing against her skin and she closed her eyes, forgetting herself in the feeling.
Sarah continued to wash Eliza’s back and hair.
“We need to get you dressed My Lady. Otherwise we will be late” Sarah said as gently as she could. Sarah knew that Lady Eliza was very tense and worried.
With a sigh, Eliza got up and wiped herself thoroughly, she wore the robe that Sarah handed out to her and Eliza took it without complaint. Sarah had laid out some dresses for Eliza and she saw each one of them.
“Which do you prefer Sarah?” Eliza asked and Sarah smiled at her brightly and pointed out to a dark green dress that complimented Eliza’s eyes.
The green dress had a normal bodice with trimmed and ruffled skirts. Eliza sighed as she watched her reflection.
“Perfect” Eliza whispered and dressed in a hurry. Eliza looked at the clock that hung in her room and frowned, she was late for breakfast and her mother would not be pleased.
“We must leave now” Eliza said once Sarah was done with her hair and a little blush and mascara.
Eliza walked in a hurry down the stairs and suddenly crashed into someone. She gave out a little shriek but was caught in someone’s arms. Eliza looked up to see who had saved her. Her breath got caught in her throat as she realised he was the man from the evening before.
“Thank you, My Lord” Eliza whispered and he let go of her, but stood very close to her.
Eliza realised that her hands were resting on his chest and quickly pulled them away. She was very aware of the male body just inches away from her.
“You are welcome, My Lady” He said and brought her hands to his lips. Eliza shivered as unknown feelings passed through her. “I need to take your leave. I am expected” He said and walked away without a second glance at Eliza.
Eliza stood there watching his retreating figure and closed her eyes tightly. She was going mad. She shouldn’t think of that man. He wasn’t the one who was going to be her husband. She shouldn’t be thinking about another man like that. But she couldn’t forget his toned body and those deep blue eyes as they looked at her. He was devilishly handsome.
“Lady Eliza” A voice called and Eliza jumped and turned around, startled.
“Sarah. What is the matter? Don’t scare me this way” Eliza said smiling fondly at Sarah who smiled back at her.
“I am sorry My Lady. But you need to get going. It has been five minutes since you left the room and I still find you standing here. Lady Rosawell will be angry” Sarah said and Eliza fidgeting with her hands nodded. She turned away from Sarah and walked down the stairs, into the dining hall.
Her mother was sitting next to King Stephen and then there was the man who was seated on the other side of the King, the man she couldn’t get out of her head.
“Eliza” King Stephen called happily and jumped up and came towards Eliza.
“Sire” Eliza said bowing her head to show respect.
“Forget the formalities. You are like my own daughter. We were worried that you wouldn’t be coming” said King Stephen and Eliza smiled at him nervously.
She couldn’t wait to meet Sir Daniel, but wondered as to why this stranger sitting on the table?
“First let us eat” King Stephen said and Eliza nodded and sat down next to her mother. She had her food quietly, trying her best not to look at the fascinating person just in front of her.
Once everyone was done eating, Eliza looked at the King. The dishes were cleared and tea was served.
“Eliza, I present you Sir Daniel” King Stephen said and Eliza felt her body going numb as the stranger . . . no Sir Daniel got up. This was Sir Daniel, the man that Eliza couldn’t stop thinking about. The man that made her feel things that she had never felt before.
“It is a pleasure to meet you” Sir Daniel said placing a kiss on Eliza’s hand. Eliza shivered once again and Sir Daniel looked into her eyes, knowingly.
“It is a pleasure to meet you too, My Lord” Eliza said and looked away from him. Sir Daniel got up from his seat and made his way towards Eliza and sat next to her. Eliza made a great effort not to look at him.
King Stephen cleared his throat and everyone stopped talking and turned their attention towards King Stephen.
“I want you both to get married as soon as possible. I cannot let Daniel stay here for long. He is needed in the West; the rebels are taking advantage of his absence. You two will be married within three days” said King Stephen.
Eliza closed her eyes tightly and looked down. Marry this man in three days. Marry a man that she doesn’t know?
“Very well” Sir Daniel said and got up from his seat, pulling Eliza with him. Daniel caught hold of Eliza’s hand and held her tightly.
“I would like to have a word with my future wife alone. Is there somewhere we can talk?” Sir Daniel asked Lady Rosawell and she nodded. Eliza pulled her hand away from Daniel and hugged her mother. She thanked the King and walked off towards the garden, knowing that Sir Daniel was following her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sir Daniel watched Eliza’s figure as she hurried towards the garden. He wanted to decline the marriage. Wanted to do something that would make her hate him. But he wasn’t able to say anything in front of the others. This was his chance. He would show her what he was like as now they were alone.
But she was a beauty and he couldn’t help but agree to that. A beauty that was pulling him away from the life he lived.
Chapter 4
Talking, Negotiating and A First Kiss
Lady Eliza stopped once she had reached the garden, closing her eyes she took a deep breath and tried to calm her nerves. The garden was beautifully made. It had different types of fountains and benches that were placed at various places. Eliza took a deep breath as she watched the water fountain that was till date her favourite place in the garden.
“Lady Eliza” A deep voice called and she didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. She already knew. Her body started to react again and she suddenly felt flushed.
“My Lord” Lady Eliza said turning towards him. She gasped loudly as she noticed Sir Daniel’s eyes. They were a delicious colour of dark blue; his hair was sticking out in all different places making him look very attractive.
“Lady Eliza?” Sir Daniel said waving a hand in front of her face. He knew what she was thinking. He saw the look that she gave him. But then again she was the innocent one . . . or was she? She was twenty five; it could be that she had been with her fair share of men.
Sir Daniel shook his head and concentrated on the task at hand. Eliza looked at him apologetically.
“I am sorry My Lord. I am just nervous about the whole ordeal” Eliza said and Sir Daniel smiled at her.
“Do you wish to marry me?” Sir Daniel asked Eliza as he caught hold of her hand and pulled her towards him so that they were only inches apart.
Eliza looked at Sir Daniel appalled and pushed against his chest.
“My Lord, please let me go” Eliza whispered trying to keep her voice steady but it wavered slightly.
“Are you nervous Lady Eliza?” Sir Daniel asked as he studied her face. She was innocent. The way she reacted to his touch was not the way normal ladies reacted.
“My Lord, please” Eliza whispered almost begging and Sir Daniel let her go.
“Now answer my question, do you wish to marry me?” Sir Daniel asked and walked towards a bench and motioned Eliza to follow him.
Wish to marry him? Did she wish to marry him? She knew the answer to that, but then why was she having second thoughts about the whole situation?
“Lady Eliza, I don’t have time to waste. Tell me now” Sir Daniel said as he got up from the bench and turned to look at her.
“No” She whispered and those words suddenly felt wrong to her. Did she really not want to marry? Marriage could be a beautiful thing and she would love it. To have a husband who would come home, who would love you?
“Then I need you to tell the same thing to the King” Sir Daniel said bending in front of Lady Eliza so as to get a better look at her. Eliza’s eyes locked with his and held. She felt as if she was seeing everything about him by just looking in to his eyes. Suddenly a hand wrapped around Eliza’s waist and pulled her forward. Without realising what was happening Sir Daniel kissed her.
Eliza couldn’t move, couldn’t comprehend what was happening. “Kiss me back damnit” Sir Daniel cursed pulling his lips away from hers. His hands on her waist became rougher and he stood up, pulling her body more tightly against his. Eliza looked up at him kissed him back.
All of sudden Sir Daniel let go of Eliza and looked away. What had gotten into him? Wasn’t she the one who was messing with his life? And in return he was kissing her?
“You will tell the King now. I am going to my room. Tell me what he decides” Sir Daniel said, turned around and walked away, leaving Eliza standing in the garden.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eliza shook her head and braced herself. She would not cry. Not over someone she didn’t know. It was just a kiss and she would just forget about it. But the kiss had been important to her. It should be as it was her first kiss. People mocked at her. She was twenty five and still unmarried, still untouched.
Eliza shook her head. This was no time for her to think about things that didn’t matter. It would be a waste of time.
She walked back into the house and then towards the dining room. Her mother and King Stephen were sitting and chatting lightly.
“Sire” Eliza said as she entered and King Stephen turned to look at her. He frowned at her condition. Her hair was in a mess and in the manner that she was standing, he could tell that she was nervous.
“Eliza My child” He said brightly even though he knew something was wrong.
“Come and sit Eliza” her mother said but Eliza shook her head, declining.
“I just wanted to speak to you Sire” Eliza said and the King nodded.
“Go on dear. The manner in which you came in, it was pretty obvious that you wanted to speak to me” King Stephen said as he folded his arms around his chest.
“I do not wish to marry Sir Daniel. We both have spoken openly to each other and we do not wish to get married” Eliza said, her voice clear and sharp.
King Stephen turned to look at Lady Rosawell, but she wasn’t looking towards him. She was busy looking at her daughter.
“Why?” Lady Rosawell said and Eliza looked up confused.
“What do you mean mother?” Eliza asked looking up at her mother.
“Why do you not wish to marry Sir Daniel?” Lady Rosawell asked in a sharp voice and Eliza looked down at the floor taking a deep breath.
“Because I have no desire of getting married” Eliza said and turned around to walk out of the door.
“Wait Eliza” King Stephen said, his voice no longer welcoming and warm. It was cold instead.
“Yes, Sire” Eliza said and turned to look at him.
“You will marry Sir Daniel. No more of this. I have decided that you two will marry and everyone knows of it. You will marry him.” King Stephen said in a hard voice and Eliza gulped down what she wanted to say. There was no point. She would have to marry Sir Daniel. She was helpless.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What the hell is wrong with me?” Sir Daniel cursed as he kicked the bed in his bedchamber. Why had he kissed Lady Eliza? Why hadn’t he controlled himself? Sir Daniel cursed once again and sat down on his bed. He closed his eyes as he tried to calm himself down. He shouldn’t have done that.
He groaned loudly and fell backwards on the bed and lay there for some time. Getting up from the bed he took off his coat and threw it on the floor. He sat there in his trousers and shirt and thought about what might be happening now.
Would Lady Eliza be able to convince King Stephen? He sighed and rested his head against the headboard. There was a light knock on the door and he sat up straight.
“Come in” He said in a clear, deep voice. The door opened slowly and Lady Eliza stood there.
“Come in” Sir Daniel repeated again and Eliza stepped into the room and kept her gaze downwards.
“So what happened?” Sir Daniel asked as he studied her body. Eliza’s dress clung to every curve of her body. She was one beautiful piece of art that Sir Daniel wished he could keep forever. Shaking his head he realised what he had been thinking.
Sir Daniel got up from the bed and walked towards Eliza, whose head was still bent. She hadn’t uttered a word since she had stepped into his room.
“Lady Eliza?” He asked and she slowly lifted her head to look at him. Eliza sighed. She straightened herself and looked at Sir Daniel, who was waiting for an answer.
“He declined” Eliza whispered and closed her eyes ready for the anger. Whatever Eliza knew about men was all that she had learned from her father. And her father never liked things when they did not go his way and he would be angry, very angry.
“Why do you close your eyes?” Sir Daniel whispered his mouth next to her ear. Eliza shivered as she felt his warm breath against her ear. She clutched Sir Daniel’s shoulder for support and clenched her teeth tightly.
“So beautiful” Sir Daniel whispered and Eliza pushed against him. They needed to speak of things. Needed to clear out everything about this marriage and now was the time. Sir Daniel let go off her and Eliza sighed and closed her eyes.
Sir Daniel looked at her and suddenly felt the urge to pull her back into his arms. What the hell was wrong with him? He wasn’t supposed to touch her?
He heard a quiet sob and stepped towards Eliza. He hated it when women cried. But this was different. She was not one of his mistresses; she was going to be his wife . . .
Sir Daniel froze in shock as he realised what he had been thinking. He wanted to go and comfort this woman that he did not want to be with... or was that the truth?
“Eliza” Sir Daniel whispered and saw her wipe her tears. She held her head and looked at him.
“Yes, My Lord” She said and waited for him to speak. Realisation had dawned on her. He was a rake, a womaniser. The way he held her, the way he kissed her. He was a man who had done this before, a man who was going to be her husband.
“We cannot change our future. If the King wants us to marry then we will, but with no strings attached” Sir Daniel said as he looked at her.
“Strings attached?” Eliza asked looking at him confused.
“What I mean is that you will be my wife, but you don’t need to do anything for me. Once we return to the West I will live my life the way I want and you can live your life the way you want” Sir Daniel said and took a deep breath before continuing.
“And about the marriage bed . . .” He said but was cut off when Eliza looked at him and glared.
“Marriage bed?” she asked suddenly not liking their negotiation.
“I will not need you to fend for my needs. I have my mistresses for that” Sir Daniel said and noticed the pain reflecting in Eliza’s eyes.
“Fine, I wish to take my leave now My Lord” Eliza whispered trying to hide her pain. He had mistresses, he did not want her. She was just a burden.
“Wait!” Sir Daniel shouted and Eliza flinched and stopped to look at him.
“Yes, My Lord?” Eliza asked as she looked at him.
“I will need a heir and that only you can give me” Sir Daniel said and stiffened.
Where the hell had that come from? Why had he told her that? He did not want an heir. He just wanted her. Damn.
“No!” Eliza said and Daniel looked at her confused.
“No?” He asked and Eliza looked at him, no longer hiding her pain and anger.
“No! I will not warm your bed! Ask one of your mistresses” She shouted and turned around to walk away.
“Do not meet me for these three days. I will see you at the altar” Eliza said and closed the door with a loud bang.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What was wrong with her? How had she allowed him to touch her? She felt sick with herself. He did not want her. She was just a way for him to get an heir. She couldn’t believe how this day had turned out to be.
She lay on her bed and cried herself to sleep. She was angry and did not wish to see Sir Daniel again.
Chapter 5
Matters and affairs
Eliza got up from the bed when she heard someone banging on her door. She groaned and stepped towards the door.
“My Lady” Sarah’s spoke from the other side of the door and Eliza let go of her breath that she had held. For a minute she had thought that it would be Sir Daniel. Eliza opened the door and let Sarah into the room.
“Lady Eliza, Lady Rosawell wanted you to come down for dinner. You have already missed lunch.” Sarah said with a disapproving look.
“I was tired Sarah. Tell mother I will be down in a moment.” Eliza said and started to make her way towards the bath chamber.
“Wait My Lady. Let me help.” Sarah said urgently and started to walk ahead of Eliza.
“There is no need for that Sarah. I do not wish to take a bath. I am just washing my face” Eliza said and ushered Sarah out of the door.
Eliza closed the door and pressed her back against the door and slid to the floor. Would he be there? Would she have to face him?
Taking a shaky breath Eliza got up from the floor. The tears started to build again but she wiped them away. She would not let him affect her.
Eliza washed her face and put on some make up so that she could hide the puffiness of her eyes. Sarah came later to help her dress and Eliza was thankful for that. She wore a simple, yet elegant dress. The dress was a seaside dress and the bust was extremely tight but that was in fashion. Eliza looked at her reflection and liked the way the blue dress looked around her body.
Taking a deep breath she left her room and wandered towards the dining hall. When she entered she noticed that Sir Daniel wasn’t seated and was nowhere in sight. She wondered where he was.
“Eliza. Come my dear” King Stephen said as he noticed her standing there.
Eliza nodded and smiled politely. She walked towards King Stephen and sat next to him. She was so glad that she didn’t need to see Sir Daniel, or that is what she told herself.
“Daniel told me to give you his apologies.” King Stephen spoke up and Eliza looked at him confused.
“Apologies?” She asked and looked at her mother who just shrugged her shoulders.
“He got invited to a party and had to leave immediately. He wanted you to go along but you wouldn’t open your door” King Stephen said and Eliza felt the colour rise to her cheeks.
“I was sleeping My Lord” Eliza said and all of them stopped talking as dinner was served. Whose party could Sir Daniel be at? Shrugging her thoughts away she started to eat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Daniel” Mathew Brassie shouted from across the room and Sir Daniel walked towards him. Mathew was a man not much older than Daniel. He was thirty two and was married to a lovely lady, or that is what Mathew thought. Mathew had blonde hair and deep brown eyes. He was very good looking for his age. He wore a frock coat along with neck tie and trousers. He looked handsome in his clothes.
Sir Daniel was dressed similarly but instead he preferred to wear a three set suit which suited him.
“How have you been?” Daniel asked as Mathew hugged him. “I am good old man. I came to know about your engagement. Congratulations” Mathew said slapping him on his back.
“Thank you” Daniel said politely and made his way towards the bar. He needed a drink.
“Sir Daniel. So long” A voice spoke from behind him and he turned around to see Helen Brassie, Mathew Brassie’s wife standing in front of him.
“Helen” He said bowing his head and kissing her hand.
He looked at Helen from top to bottom. Her red hair was pulled up in a new style and her teal eyes and face was done with excess make-up.
“Mathew is leaving tonight. Why don’t you stay” Helen said as she watched Daniel gulp the white liquid down his throat. Daniel smiled at how eager she seemed. He didn’t feel guilty about being with Helen. It was second nature to him.
Daniel walked towards where Mathew was sitting and started to speak with him.
“So how come you are ready to get tied down?” Mathew asked chuckling.
“King’s Orders” Daniel said and Mathew looked at him sympathetically.
“An ugly lady?” Mathew asked and Daniel shook his head. There was no way that Lady Eliza was ugly; she was a beautiful tempting piece.
“From your silence I guess not” Mathew said and ate some of the eats that were kept on the table in front of him.
“No, she is a pretty little thing” Daniel said chuckling and Mathew smiled along with him,
“Mathew! Are you coming?” A voice shouted from the other side of the room and Daniel noticed a bunch of nobles standing there.
“Coming! Sorry Daniel. I have to leave. Got a game of cards to win” Mathew said as he got up from his seat.
Daniel smirked as he noticed Mathew leaving. Now was the time for his fantasy to become reality.
He looked around the room and his gaze fell on Helen Brassie. She was chatting with a few of her lady friends. Helen felt someone staring at her and saw Daniel sitting across the room.
She excused herself from the group and started to walk up the stairs. She stopped and looked at Sir Daniel over her shoulder. He was staring at her. She smiled and walked up the stairs and into a room. She knew that Sir Daniel would be able to find it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After dinner, Eliza excused herself from the table and made her way towards the garden. Where could Sir Daniel be? When would he be back?
“Thinking about Daniel” A deep voice spoke and Eliza jumped and turned around to see King Stephen standing there.
“My Lord, you scared me” Eliza whispered and smiled politely at King Stephen.
“If you are waiting up for Daniel, then it’s of no use. He won’t be back before midnight or later.” King Stephen said looking apologetically at Eliza.
“I must take my leave now, Sire” Eliza said and started to move towards her bed chamber.
King Stephen watched Eliza’s retreating figure and frowned. Had he made the right decision?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eliza woke up the next morning and noticed Sarah folding her clothes.
“How late am I Sarah?” Eliza asked Sarah who just smiled in return.
“You aren’t late, My Lady. Lady Rosawell told me to tell you that Lady Wolfe will be here in some time” Sarah whispered and Eliza hurriedly got up from the bed.
“Get my bath water ready Sarah. I need to get dressed soon” Eliza said smiling and Sarah nodded and hurried towards the bath chamber.
Eliza stepped towards her closet and picked out a pale blue dress along with all the jewellery.
“My Lady we are ready “said Sarah and Eliza walked towards the bath chamber, laying the clothes on the bed.
Eliza stepped out of the room and down into the hall. Rose Wolfe was seated next to a lady that Eliza hadn’t met before.
“Eliza” Rose shouted as she ran towards Eliza and hugged her tightly. Eliza returned the hug. She had missed the warmth of Rose’s embrace. Rose was Eliza’s best friend. They had met during Eliza’s father’s funeral and had become quick friends.
“How have you been?” Rose asked as she pulled away and Eliza just shook her head. She noticed how tired Rose looked.
Her brown hair was pulled in an untidy bun and the oversize gown on her body made her look very small.
“How is the pregnancy going?” Eliza asked softly and noticed the tears welling up in Rose’s eyes.
“Oh! Eliza” She cried and hugged Eliza once again.
Eliza led rose to the place where Rose had been seated earlier. She noticed the other Lady looking over at Eliza, as if she was studying her. The lady was indeed very beautiful. Her red hair was pulled down and her teal eyes watched Eliza’s every move.
“I will tell you everything. First meet Helen Brassie. She is my cousin. She is married to Mathew Brassie” Rose said and Eliza smiled and greeted Helen.
“You are Eliza and the one who is supposed to marry Sir Daniel?” Helen asked Eliza with a snobbish tone in her voice. Eliza felt hurt but hid it well.
“Yes” She whispered softly and turned to look at Rose who was looking at Eliza apologetically.
“Now tell me what is wrong Rose?” Eliza asked softly and Helen snorted from next to her.
“I will tell you. She feels that Lord Liam doesn’t pay much attention to her after her pregnancy. That is the reason why she has been crying all day” Helen said, disgust layering her words.
“Rose, Lord Liam loves you. We all know that.” Eliza said soothingly, wishing she could do something to help her friend.
“No Eliza. He doesn’t even look at me. It’s like he hates my presence” Rose said crying out. Eliza hugged Rose tightly, not knowing what else she was supposed to do.
“What is going on here?” A deep voice spoke and Eliza turned around and saw Sir Daniel standing there and watching the women with curious eyes.
Chapter 6
The Truth And Heartbreak
Eliza looked around and saw Sir Daniel standing there staring at Rose, who was wrapped around in Eliza’s arms.
Eliza couldn’t help but stare at him for a little while. He was so devastatingly handsome.
Rose cried aloud all of a sudden and Eliza pulled her gaze away from him. Rose needed her attention at the moment, not Sir Daniel.
“Everything will be alright Rose” Eliza whispered as she stroked Rose’s hair.
“Nothing will be alright” Rose wailed and buried her face in Eliza’s neck and cried.
“I guess I should be taking my leave” Sir Daniel said feeling a bit awkward. But it wasn’t because of Eliza or Rose that he was feeling so. He was actually worried on seeing Helen Brassie standing near his bride to be.
What if Helen uttered whatever had happened yesterday?
“Then you won’t need to marry her” his voice spoke to him.
“There is no need to leave Sir Daniel. We all enjoy your company” Lady Brassie said in a tone which made Eliza look at her sharply.
Was she just imagining or did Helen’s tone hold more?
“I am sure you all do. But at this moment I have some work on my hands” Sir Daniel said and turned around, looking at Eliza once before he left.
He suddenly felt guilty about what he had done yesterday. He had not only in a way cheated on Eliza but also on his friend. He needed to stop this. He couldn’t be sleeping around with married women.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I am fine” Rose whispered sniffing. She wiped her tears away and smiled at Eliza.
“I know you are not Rose. Don’t lie to me” Eliza said and hugged Rose tightly.
“I am sorry for burdening you with my problems. But it’s just that I am so worried. I don’t know whom to go to” Rose said.
“Don’t worry Rose. Trust me. Give Lord Liam some time” Eliza whispered reassuringly and Rose nodded and sipped the tea that was brought out by the servant.
“So how long have you known Sir Daniel for?” Helen Brassie asked Eliza. Eliza made herself comfortable next to Rose and looked at Helen. There was something that Helen was hiding and Eliza was sure of it.
“Not for long. I just met him two days ago.” Eliza said stiffly and looked at Helen’s brightened expression.
“Oh! You poor dear. You must not even be aware of what all he has done” Helen said in a bitchy tone and Eliza held her tongue to stop herself from retorting.
